Meet our latest award recipient, Alissa Nelson

Alissa Nelson of Honolulu, Hawaii has spent the past 15 years paying off her student loans. With over $70,000 in loans, each month Alissa wrote check after check, with little change in her balance.  But her persistence in playing Givling, a free trivia game that crowdfunds student loan debt paid off.

Alissa just found out she secured the coveted free $5,000 award right when she needed it the most. “My debt has been pretty overwhelming. In the last month, my car was totaled (not my fault) and I was evicted (without cause) and this award has been a real light at the end of a bummer financial tunnel.”

While Alissa doesn’t regret her student loans because they allowed her to pursue her dream job in social work and public health, she described the debt as “difficult and the public service loan forgiveness program was a broken promise to those in non-profit industries.”

However, additional help may be on the way. The current government administration is reviewing options for student loan forgiveness and reforms to the PSLF program. Student loan debt reached an all-time high in 2020 of more than $1.7 trillion. The average graduate reached a record in loan debt of more than $30,000 in 2019 for the first time since U.S. News and World Report tracked data, which is more than $6,000 higher in debt on average than a graduate held 10 years prior.

“I was feeling hopeless about every paying off my loans and Givling gave me some hope that I might be able to get out from underneath them.”
