A True Story About Dad, Cancer, and Kombucha

My dad was the archetypal American father: hard-working, kind, loved by his family and community, and absolutely NOT adventurous when it came to food

He trusted the classic foods we all know and love, and therefore believed that strange things like “kin-wa” or “kam-bucha” had no business attempting to make an appearance in his tried-and-true dietary life. But cancer has a way of changing things.

After having your gut flora utterly destroyed by years of chemo and various other drugs aiding you in your fight against multiple myeloma, you find you’re willing to try anything when your doctor suggests fermented teas could help heal your microbiome, to hopefully make eating somewhat enjoyable again.

That’s what got my dad to finally try “those weird hippie drinks,” and let me tell you…he was not impressed!

We brought home every flavor of the stand-by kombucha brand my hip friends and I love, and what did Dad think? “This stuff is TERRIBLE!

Many, many kombucha brands and flavors later, we finally found it.

This new brand showed up on our grocery store’s kombucha shelf with cool-shaped bottles and yummy sounding flavors, so Mom and I bought a few home for Dad to try, fully expecting the same result of sip, yuck, “nope, not gonna drink that” as all the others had produced.

But amazingly, Dad took a sip, swallowed, said nothing, then took another sip. “You know, that’s pretty good” he said.

And from then on, Mom always bought Health-Ade kombuchas for Dad, and he actually drank and enjoyed them.

If he were still here, I know my dad would give a chuckle recounting all those “awful” kombuchas we made him try.

Years later, it’s pretty special to me that Health-Ade has partnered with us to share their products that both me, and my dad, truly stand by.

Thank you for letting me share this story with you.

Thank you for being part of the Force For Good.
