Columbus, OH – “Janet! I’m in the $10,000 funding spot!” exclaimed Physician Jennifer Gauntt as she woke her wife up to tell her she was Givling’s latest $10,000 recipient.  Janet responded with a somber “awesome,” and quickly drifted back to sleep, waking up the next day with no memory of this unforgettable moment for Jennifer.  “I texted her (Janet) later that morning to ask her if she remembered me waking her up. She didn’t! So, I got to re-live the excitement all over again when I told her (for the second time).”

This week, Jennifer celebrates her 3-year Givling anniversary and knocking off 15 months of student loan repayments with her $10,000 award. “I started playing Givling in October 2017. I heard about Givling through a Facebook group for physicians, as an anesthesiologist was one of the first $50k recipients. With my very large student loan debt, I was intrigued, downloaded the app, and I haven’t missed a day since!”

Jennifer, her wife Janet, and 3-year old son Linus moved to Columbus, Ohio, about 2.5 years ago after living on the East Coast for nearly 40 years.  The move allowed Jennifer to fulfill her passion for working in the cardiac intensive care unit at one of the country’s largest children’s hospitals. “The pandemic brought special challenges to my medical unit.  Most of my patients are newborns and infants who require cardiac surgery to survive. In the first weeks to months of the pandemic, many hospital systems (including mine) across the country halted elective surgeries. 

For most of our patients, cardiac surgery is not elective; therefore, my unit operated at full capacity throughout the pandemic, and I continued to work as I had been before COVID-19 (with additional PPE, of course). Luckily, children seem to be much less affected by COVID-19 (for reasons that are still unclear to scientists and medical professionals), and our pediatric cardiac patient population has been largely spared from COVID-19 infection.”

With $10,000 less in student loan debt, Jennifer looks forward to enjoying the benefits of Columbus, Ohio, in a post-pandemic world, including Broadway productions, concerts, ballet, and more.
